Khotachiwadi - Discover the 19th Century Mumbai
Khotachiwadi, the oldest preserved settlement in Mumbai, is the ideal place to visit to see what the city was like some 200 years ago. It comprises of a collection of charming vernacular-style houses, a unique example of 19th century architecture that has survived the onslaught of the modern builder. This heritage precinct was founded by Khot, who sold plots of land to the local East Indian families. Of the original 65 houses, now only 28 stand, the remaining having been pulled down to make way for skyscrapers. A walk down the lanes with a guide will reveal beautifully painted yellow, red, green and blue cottages made of wood, with large open front verandahs, back courtyard and external staircases to the upper floor. Atlas Reizen can arrange a visit to one of the families here for a chat over a cup of tea and snacks. A wonderful way to learn about the people of Khotachwadi, their lifestyles and their struggle to keep their heritage alive! As a starter, visit their blog: http://khotachiwadi.urbz.net/
