Fiesta de la Tradición - Los Gauchos de Argentina
Buenos Aires offers a year-round smorgasbord of events, from its tango festivals and competitions to its September week-long all-city arts show. In March, Mar del Plata is the site of an international film festival, considered one of the top such events in the world. And for over 70 years, San Antonio de Areco has been hosting its wildly popular Fiesta de la Tradición in November, showcasing the country’s gaucho traditions in an extravaganza of music, dance and horsemanship.
Since 1934, this November festival has feted San Antonio’s gaucho heritage with guided visits to historic sites, lectures by top folklorists, crafts fairs, and folkloric music and dance—plus, of course, flamboyant displays of horsemanship. While the principal Día de la
Tradición is November 10, the festivities normally stretch over two weekends, climaxing on the final Sunday.
San Antonio de Areco is a landmark of cultural tradition located 70 miles from BA. The entire town dresses up to the nines to show the world its own identity. When in 1926, “Don Segundo Sombra” the book about the gaucho was published, in the author’s estancia “La Porteña” gauchos and neighbours gathered for a Creole feast to honour Ricardo Güiraldes and his masterpiece. Until today, the celebration recreates this historical event, and renders homage to the countryman.
The wonderfully restored private estancia where Bert and Patsy stayed a while ago is the perfect base for attending la Fiesta de la Tradición. You can ride horseback yourself or even play polo, the national sport of Argentina! Refresh yourself in the swimming pool or relax in the beautiful garden.
